No, it was not for a defenceman.

The Leafs acquired forward Aatu Raty from the Vancouver Canucks hours after the 23-year-old Finn cleared waivers.

Does the Chris Tanev injury have you worried the Maple Leafs' defence will continue to be an impediment to success?

Going to Vancouver are forwards Jacob Quillan and Brandon Buhr.

A second-round pick by the New York Islanders in 2021, Raty has played in 118 NHL games with the Islanders and Canucks.

Raty had one goal in four games with Vancouver this season — he was a healthy scratch in four other games — and had a 56.8% success rate in the faceoff circle. In 66 games last year, he had four goals and 10 assists.

Faceoff ace joining Marlies

For now, the 6-foot-2, 204-pound Raty will join the Toronto Marlies, the Leafs said. While he could provide the Leafs with more depth at forward, that area has not been a pressing issue for Toronto in the early stages of the 2026-27 regular season. Skating is one of Raty’s assets.

Raty is in the second year of a two-year contract with an average annual value of $850,000 US. He will be a restricted free agent next summer.

“I was with the Islanders (as an assistant coach) when we drafted him,” Leafs coach Jim Hiller said. “I really liked him. He had really good hockey sense. Really nice kid. He made a really good impression, I remember, on me.”

Quillan played in 23 games for the Leafs in 2025-26, scoring one goal and recording two assists, before contributing nine points in 19 playoff games for the Marlies on the way to a Calder Cup title.

In four games with the Marlies this season, the 24-year-old Quillan had no points.

Buhr, 24, was signed by Toronto to a one-year contract last March after he spent three seasons at Union College. He had not appeared in a game for the Marlies this season.
