The Museum of Toronto will have a brick-and-mortar location at 2 Queen St. E. as of next spring, taking over a former Bank of Montreal building.

“After more than a decade of bringing Toronto’s history to life through exhibitions, pop-ups, and community experiences, we’re taking our biggest step yet,” said the Museum on its Instagram page.

“Museum of Toronto is coming to 2 Queen Street East in Spring 2027! This new permanent home marks an exciting chapter in our journey to build a city museum dedicated to the people, places, and stories that have shaped Toronto.”

The museum says it’s working with the Toronto-based architecture studio, Superkül, “known for creating thoughtful, enduring spaces that balance design, sustainability, and community needs.”

It continued: “With their expertise in adaptive reuse and reimagining existing buildings, Superkül is helping us transform the former Bank of Montreal space into a welcoming cultural destination that celebrates Toronto’s past while looking toward its future.”

Reception to news of the location has been good

The news of a permanent Museum of Toronto was well received online, with congratulations coming from everyone from Toronto’s deputy Mayor and City Councillor to Toronto tourism and the temporarily closed McMichael Gallery in Kleinburg, Ont.

“The best news,” wrote Ausma Malik, the City Councillor for Toronto’s Spadina-Fort York Ward, who is running again to represent the ward in Monday’s municipal election.

“Exciting news!! Can’t wait to see the new digs,” responded @destination_toronto.

The McMichael, meanwhile, simply posted three confetti streamers.

Otherwise, the citizenry also appeared to be impressed.

“Omg that’s amazing!! I love your 401 Richmond space, but a permanent dedicated space is HUGE!! Congrats y’all!!” wrote @juliabruc.

“Very exciting! Looking forward to checking out your new home!” added @lanrickbennettjr.
