What is Larry Tanenbaum doing, now that he’s no longer chairman of the Maple Leafs and the Raptors?

Well, mostly, he’s giving back to the community.

The Terry Fox Foundation announced Thursday morning that it has received the largest donation in its history — $25 million for cancer research from the Larry and Judy Tanenbaum Foundation.

“This is incredible,” said Darryl Sittler, the former Maple Leafs captain, who was friends with the late Terry Fox and ran with him in downtown Toronto during his Marathon of Hope.

“Terry was my hero,” said Sittler. “I was his hero. It was funny that way.

“The Tanenbaums, here, are such generous people. What they’re doing here is amazing.”

“The motivation for us is very human,” said Tanenbaum — owner of the Toronto Tempo women’s pro basketball team and an investor in the Professional Women’s Hockey League — at a Distillery District gathering on Thursday morning.

‘This is about giving Canadians with cancer a chance to live better lives.”

The $25 million Tanenbaum donated will be matched by the federal government to bring the Terry Fox Foundation $50 million for future research.

“When you have,” said Tanenbaum, “you have to give back.”

This is his family’s way of giving back.
