During his opening remarks, with video and audio captured by CTV News, candidate Daniel Seguin pulled out a pink bra and said he was going to “change his sex” to convince more women to vote for him.
“The women who have told me they are not going to vote for a man; they are only going to vote for a woman,” Seguin said as he held up the bra. “Now I should have a few votes more.”
Seguin’s outburst was met with some rejection from the audience. One attendee booed the comment.
Mayoral candidate Melanie Demers then asked that the spectator who booed be removed from the audience.
To the surprise of moderator George Legler, co-president of the Nipissing University Political Science Society, Demers and Seguin left the stage at the same time.
Courting controversy
“I will walk out with him,” Demers said. “Bye.”
“I am getting out of here. This is disgusting,” Seguin added a few seconds later as he crossed in front of the audience.
Campus security escorted both candidates out of the student union while audience members clapped.
Neither candidate returned to the debate.
This isn’t the first time Seguin has courted some controversy in the race for mayor. During a previous debate, he removed a pair of pink handcuffs from his jacket before directing controversial comments towards current mayor Peter Chirico.
The remaining three hopefuls — Jamie Lowery, Maggie Horsfield and Connor Currie — remained on the stage and discussed the issues affecting the city’s students and the residents at large.
